Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves his child. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and following his instructions.

In fact, this is what loving God means: following his instructions. And his instructions aren’t difficult, because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world – our faith. And who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

This Jesus is he who comes by water and by blood – not by water only, but by both water and blood – and the Spirit, who is truth, confirms this by his testimony. So we have three witnesses – the Spirit, the water and the blood – and these three agree.

We accept the witness of men, but the witness of God is greater, because it is the witness concerning his Son. Anyone who disbelieves God is calling him a liar, because he’s refusing to accept the testimony God has given concerning his Son.

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever is without the Son is without life.

I’ve written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence which we have when we approach God: if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we also know that we have what we ask for.

If you see a brother committing a sin which doesn’t lead to death, you should pray, and God will give him life. Please note: I’m only talking about sins which don’t lead to death. There is a sin which leads to death and I’m not saying that you should pray that. All wickedness is sin, but not every sin leads to death.

We know that anyone who’s born of God doesn’t continue sinning. God’s Son keeps him safe, and the evil one can’t hurt him. We also know that we’re the children of God and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. However, the Son of God has come and he’s given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we’re in him who is true because we’re in his Son Jesus Christ. He’s the true God and eternal life.

Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
