Seen and heard

He who existed from the beginning, whom we have seen and heard – yes, we saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands – we want to tell you about the Word of life. He who is life appeared – we’ve seen him and can confirm the fact. And now we’d like to tell about the one who is that eternal life which was with the Father, but has now appeared to us. Yes, we’re talking about what we’ve actually seen and heard, so that you can have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. And now we’re writing to you to make our happiness complete.

This is the message that we received from him and now declare to you: God is light. In him there’s no darkness in him at all. So if we claim to have fellowship with him, but still live in darkness, we’re lying and not practicing the truth. But if we live in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

If we claim that we don’t have any sin, we’re deceiving ourselves and living a lie. But if we confess that we’ve sinned, he’s faithful and just – he’ll forgive us our sin and cleanse us from guilt. But if we pretend that we don’t have any sin, we’re saying he’s a liar and his word means nothing to us.

My dear children, I’m writing this to you so that you don’t sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ, the Holy One. He made himself the atoning sacrifice for our sins – and not just for our sins, but those of the whole world.

John
