Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil. He had very little to eat for forty days and became extremely hungry. Then the devil came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.”
Jesus said, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the highest point of the temple.
“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down, for it is written: ‘He will command his angels to protect you, and they will lift you up in their hands so that you don’t strike your foot on a stone.’”
Jesus answered, “It’s also written: ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’”
Next, the devil took him to the summit of a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
“I will give all this to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”
“Away from me, Satan!” said Jesus. “For it’s written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
Then the devil left Jesus and angels came to minister to him.
