From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful followers of Christ Jesus: may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
Praise be to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ. For even before he had made the world, God loved us and chose us to be pure and blameless in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us in his dear Son.
In Christ we have the freedom which was purchased with his blood and forgiveness of our sins through the riches of his grace that he has showered upon us with all wisdom and understanding. God has made known to us his plan which was previously hidden – the plan of his good pleasure – that, when the fullness of time comes, he will bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth in Christ.
In Christ we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, that we who were the first to trust in him would bring praise and glory to God. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the good news of your rescue. When you believed, you were given an identifying mark, the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the time comes for the redemption of God’s people – to the praise of his glory.
For this reason, ever since I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God’s people everywhere, I haven’t stopped giving thanks for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you may know him better. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the hope to which he has given you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe. This is the same mighty power which raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honour at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.
God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
